Buyers Guide – Hedge trimmers
When buying a hedge trimmer, the most important thing to consider is the amount and size of hedging which you have to maintain, as this will determine the size and power of hedge trimmer which you will need. As a general point though, any garden with more than a small hedge can be cared for far more quickly and easily with a hedge trimmer than with ordinary garden shears.
For larger areas of hedging then it is best to select a hedge trimmer with a longer blade as this will cut more quickly. Normally for ordinary garden use a trimmer with around a 350-400mm blade is sufficient, but for more extensive hedging then a blade of 600mm or longer is more effective, for example the Ryobi Quick-Fire Hedge Trimmer. In terms of single or double action blades, double action is recommended as this cuts down on vibration.
The weight of the hedge trimmer is also important as it is this, combined with the blade length, which determines maneuverability. It should be noted that petrol models will be heavier than their electrical counterparts. This is another key decision with regards to the method of power, electric hedge trimmers are handy, but it is important to make sure that the cable will reach the hedges you wish to trim. Petrol hedge trimmers are more flexible as they don’t have a cable to maneuver around and are also more powerful. They tend to be used for larger jobs. Battery powered hedge trimmers are also useful but it is important to check the charge and use times.
Finally, the reach of the hedge trimmer is important, particularly if you have tall hedges. If this is the case you may want to consider a telescopic hedge trimmer, such as the Ryobi Articulating Pole Hedge Trimmer.
